Back to blog The people of New York will be visited by Pope Francis on Thursday 24th September. Whether you’ll be joining the crowds, taking part in the prayer service or getting on with your day, there are some things you might want to know before planning any journeys.
  1. Pope Francis arrives at John F. Kennedy Airport at 5pm and will be travelling through the city. USA Today have put together some useful maps and schedules. http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2015/09/22/pope-visit-washington-new-york-philadelphia-united-states/72073294/
  2. The good news is that the Subway doesn’t have any planned closures (Any regular works will still be in effect.) Subway managers, however, will be keeping an eye on things should changes to services be required. There will be extra station staff to guide the crowds, so we recommend checking the Service Status of your lines before travelling. http://web.mta.info/nyct/service/events/PopeFrancisVisit2015.htm#subway
  3. Bus routes might be rerouted near to the event. MTA are warning passengers to expect heavy delays and diversions. http://www.mta.info/press-release/nyc-transit/mta-may-reroute-portions-25-bus-routes-during-pope-francis%E2%80%99-visit
  4. The major rail roads will operate extra trains on the day and will also have extra trains on stand-by, ready for the end of the Papal Mass. Just like the subway, passengers should be aware of potential changes and delays. http://web.mta.info/nyct/service/events/PopeFrancisVisit2015.htm#rail
