An unpublished report by Transport for London has revealed that 57 Tube stations are at risk of flooding. Included in the list of 57 stations are some of London’s busiest such as Euston, Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus and the busiest station on the map Waterloo – which gets an estimated 89.4 million passengers per year.
The report stated that The London Underground has managed to avoid major issues so far, even after the storms that hit the capital earlier this year, but that the risk is due to increase.

“London has been fortunate to escape the worst of recent storm events in the UK, but it is only a matter of time before heavy rainfall seriously affects London and the Underground network… This risk is also generally expected to increase due to two factors. Firstly London’s population is increasing within the existing built footprint – this will further overload sewers. Secondly, climate change predictions are, that storms will become more intense, therefore the type of storm that causes surface water flooding are becoming more likely.”The report highlighted seven different significant potential sources of flooding; tidal, fluvial, surface water, sewer flooding, groundwater flooding, canal and reservoir flooding and burst water mains. For the 1.3 billion annual passengers who use the London Underground the threat is significant, affecting many stations in zone one as well as a high percentage of the Northern Line. Below is a map highlighting all of the stations in the report at risk of flooding, shown on the official Transport for London Tube Map.
