One of the best ways to get about on the Metro is to use a Pop Pay As You Go (PAYG) smart card. You simply top it up at stations and then pay for your journeys as you make them. Rates for single journeys on the PAYG card start at £1.80 for one zone increasing to £3.40 for all 3 zones. You can also use your PAYG card on the buses and ferries.
Metro single tickets are also valid on local rail services between Newcastle and Sunderland, and can also be used on the Shields Ferry. For one zone a single it costs £2.80 and for all zones they cost £4.50.

Penalty Fares
A Penalty Fare is £100 plus the price of the full single fare applicable for your intended journey. However if it is paid within 21 days, the Penalty Fare is reduced to £50 plus the price of the single fare applicable.
If you fail to pay the Penalty Fare you may be prosecuted. Conviction would result in a financial penalty being imposed.

Metro Day Ticket
Day tickets allow unlimited travel on various forms of transport. Prices vary depending on the how many zones you’re travelling in.
Up to three kids aged 11 and under can travel for free on Metro and the Shields Ferry, all day, every day when accompanied by a fare-paying adult.

Metro Season Ticket
Metro Season Tickets are available for one week, four weeks or a year and offers superb value if you’re a commuter or regular Metro user. It can be used at any time of the day for unlimited travel in the zones chosen.
