This summer we’ve been inspired by the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio to participate in a range of sports. So we launched Mapway’s Summer of Sport, an event that would run throughout August and see everyone at Mapway competing together.

Activities included foosball, table tennis, Kinect boxing and Kinect rafting (or sailing as we called it!). Everyone in the Manchester and Cambridge offices was split in to 4 teams, representing Spain, Japan, China and Germany, all countries that we have transport apps in. Then over the course of 3 weeks nearly 50 matches took place to see which team would come out on top. Table tennis was a popular sport with lots of close matches. In order to win a player had to get 21 points and also be 2 ahead of the other player. Spain did really well at table tennis, winning all 3 matches! Kinect boxing was a good work out and a good game for team China as they won all of their matches. It was a really fun game but we did look a bit like this when playing it… boxing-cat The office foosball table took up a prime spot in the kitchen and the games attracted big crowds. Foosball also saw our only doubles match of the summer. This was another good event for China, winning 3 more points overall. The second option for Kinect fans was the sailing where players had to lean left and right then jump at the right moment to collect coins. This was a great one to observe as you will see in the video above! Team Japan did the best at this one, winning all 3 of their matches. By the end of the 3 weeks the leader board looked like this.

China – 10

Germany – 5

Spain – 5

Japan – 4

But the fun didn’t end there. We booked an afternoon at F.C. United  and used their grounds for an extra special sporting event. The aim for the day was to recreate the primary school sports days we all remember. So first on the list was, of course, an egg and spoon race. Other events on the day included welly wanging, a British folk sport that involves literally throwing wellies. Hula hooping was also on the list, a relay race that involved the runners to pull a hoop over themselves before hurrying to the finish line. The final two sports were the bean bag toss and the football penalty shootout. We were joined on the day by the lovely coaches at F.C. United  who helped to set everything up, provided us with cool ice water and introduced us to the sport of footgolf. The wins from the first set of matches were multiplied by 100 and added to the scores from the sports day. The final totals were as follows:

1st: China – 2,220

2nd: Japan – 1,910

3rd: Spain – 1,555

4th: Germany – 1,245

We want to say a big thank you to everyone at F.C. United for making us feel welcome and well done to team China for winning the gold! Our sister company mxData is a sponsor and big supporter of F.C. United. who do great work for the community. You can find out more about what they do on their website or you can contact them here.
