Back to blog London Commuters have been patiently waiting while work took place at Tottenham Court Road station. Today, for the first time in nearly a year, passengers could get on the Central Line at Tottenham Court Road. While we won’t see this reflected on the map just yet (more on that later), commuters are understandably excited to see full service resume.

Part of the work by TfL included a new 110-metre passageway, a new step-free access lift, refurbished escalators and refitted platforms and passageways. The new glass entrance and brighter look, certainly has people smiling today.

Art fans also have a reason to be happy as the closure allowed time for the careful restoration of the 20th century Paolozzi mosaics. Around 95% of the mosaics are back to their original 1984 locations with the remainder being transported back to Paolozzi’s home city. Not everything is back to normal however, at least not quite. TfL’s Tube Map won’t be seeing an update before the new year, so Tottenham Court Road will be missing its interchange symbol for a few more weeks.

So what does this mean for the Tube Map app?

Update: The new map is now live on the app. We use the latest official TfL map which means we’ll be updating the map as soon as it’s available in January*. Until then, departures on the Central Line won’t be viewable and offline routes will still behave as if Tottenham Court Road was only running on the Northern Line. However, real-time routing will show routes that include the Central Line option. Real-time routing provides the best routes using current information, so make sure to view your options when you’re on 3G/ 4G or wifi. Don’t have the Tube Map app? It’s available on iOS and Android. tcr-ticket-hall-1 *This is not a definite date, it is based on our latest information but TfL could decide to update earlier/ later than this.
